M&M’s Creepy Cocoa Crisp Review
Halloween was so different when I was growing up in the 80s. Our costumes were hand-made by our moms, not Etsy shop owners or big box stores. The only photos taken were glued into a photo album, not put on social media and judged. The fear of finding a razor blade in a fun-size Snickers was legit… but now parents are more scared of sugars and artificial ingredients in the candy. We were set free at very young ages, with our groups of friends in the neighborhood, while nowadays, there is an “appropriate” age to let you kids go off on their own. And we didn’t have personalized trick-or-treat buckets. We knew it was ours because it never left our side.
One thing that hasn’t really changed over the decades is the innovative candy every season. In 1982, the most popular Halloween candy was Reese’s Pieces – because they were featured in the movie E.T. And we hadn’t seen or tasted anything like those before, that’s for sure! It seems like a struggle for candy companies to come up with something new, exciting and innovative. But M&M’s – now that’s one company that never disappoints!
This year, they created something really fun for the Halloween season – Creepy Cocoa Crisp M&M’s. The package says, “Cocoa Crisp Center with a layer of Dark Chocolate.” I have been loving their recent releases – like the M&M’s Neopolitan, and of course the ever popular Flavor Votes! Last year, they rolled out the Cookies n Scream M&M’s, but we weren’t that impressed. It’s time for something new, fun, and DELICIOUS!
I’m not a huge dark chocolate fan, but have found some that I enjoy. It mostly tastes waxy and bitter to me – which is clearly not appetizing. But I love that the package shows little cocoa crisps in a bowl – they look like Cocoa Krispies or Cocoa Pebbles. Wrap those crunchy crispy things in dark chocolate and cover it with the classic candy shell, and you’re in business.
First of all, I love the color choices for these- red, orange and brown. Perfectly Autumnesque and Halloweeny. They are different sizes, too – some are more circular and small, while others look like Peanut M&M’s. That makes them much more exciting and unique, for sure.
It’s love at first bite. These are REALLY tasty! And honestly, they are exactly what the package promises. They are a crispy cereal-like crunchy thing covered in dark chocolate, then wrapped in the classic candy shell. The dark chocolate is not waxy, OR bitter – it’s just a deep chocolate flavor and it’s really yummy. The crispies are brilliant. Absolutely brilliant – I thought maybe it would have one piece of Cocoa Pebbles in each M&M… but it’s actually quite a bit of crispy in there! And it’s those crispy bits that actually keep crunching after the candy is basically gone.
These are 100% legit, and way better than the Cookies n Scream from last year. I love the deep, dark flavors of this candy, because they actually put me in the spirit of Halloween. Plus, the aftertaste is awesome – it’s a cocoa flavor all the way. Milk chocolate has that creamy flavor because it contains butter and sugar. But cocoa lacks the fats of butter and has far less sugar, giving a very pure chocolate taste. That’s probably why it goes so well with the dark chocolate.
I do miss Halloweens of the 80s a lot… but knowing the companies can still bring it out and create awesome and innovative candies makes me feel like a kid again. It stirs up all of that excitement of going door to door, trick-or-treating, and getting the newest candy or a full-size Snickers. Since I’d probably be arrested if I tried to dress up, fit in with kids and knock on strangers doors begging for treats…I’ll be fine at home this season with a bag of Creepy Cocoa Crisp M&M’s and some scary movies.
