Growing up, my parents were pretty strict with what my 4 siblings and I could eat.  We were pretty lucky to have balanced meals every single day… with minimal sugary snacks and treats.  Sometimes, we’d get a Twinkie in our lunch bags as a surprise.  Every month or so, we’d get treated to going out for ice cream (yah, that was a thing when I was a kid).  So, you would be hard pressed to find many treats laying around our house.  That’s one of the reasons I loved my childhood bestie, Danika. Her family was all about treats and snacks, AND her dad was a doctor… although that validation for giving us cookies and crap food didn’t fly with my parents.

Anyway, Danika’s family had a cabinet in the kitchen – a kid-level cabinet.  And it was FILLED with cookies, brownies, crackers, candy and everything I was banned from enjoying at my house.  We would literally sit on the kitchen floor with that cabinet open, shoving that shit in our faces like we were starving kids.  My favorite was the Pop-Tarts.

Her mom always stocked up on Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts. Probably because I ate so many.  But I couldn’t just put a pack in my pocket and ride my bike home.  I had to cut them into tiny squares, and divide them between my pockets to smuggle them into my house.  When Pop-Tarts Cereal was released and I saw these tiny Pop-Tarts – it immediately reminded me of my amazing trick to get contraband passed the guards (my parents) and into my room.

Kellogg’s just released these highly anticipated new cereals in the most popular flavors: Pop-Tarts Frosted Strawberry and Pop-Tarts Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon.  I can’t help but feel a bit like a rebel while I’m checking these out.  I’m saying, “screw you!” to the man (my parents, in this case), decades after sneaking them into enemy territory.  And I’m loving this feeling.  I feel excited and empowered with these bite-sized Pop-Tarts just like I had in my tiny Jordache pockets when I was 8 years old.

I tried both of these and can only say one thing about this attempt at making Pop-Tarts into a cereal:  “HOLY CRAPBALLS!”  These are absolutely, 100%, spot-on perfect.  Each piece has a little dollup of filling in it.  I wasn’t expecting to be able to really taste the filling in either cereal, because, let’s be honest – it’s cheaper to cheat, right?  But Kellogg’s did not cheat us out of the filling.  It’s prominent in every single piece!  And the frosting on the outside is so much fun because each piece is literally covered in it.  In fact, it’s the frosting that you’ll smell when you open the boxes.

There is no doubt what you’re smelling when you take a whiff.  These smell exactly  like their pastry friends.  In fact, you could put either a Strawberry or Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tart in front of my nose, and then have me sniff the cereal, and I wouldn’t now the difference.  It’s really uncanny and pretty cool.  As for the taste – it’s LEGIT.  These taste exactly like Pop-Tarts. Exactly.  They are just crunchier and not warm, because no toaster is required.  When they get soaked in the milk, they do lose a bit of the frosting flavor, but are still incredible.

I totally wish these were around when I was a kid.  It would have made my ballsy snack hiding a lot easier. Plus, there wouldn’t have been crazy amounts of crumbs in my Jordache pockets.  If you’re a Snack Gator fan, you know about the Snickerdoodle incident.  I clearly didn’t learn my lesson.  But now that these ARE around, I highly recommend you grab them. Seriously – go to Walmart, search the aisles and GRAB THEM.  If I had to pick my favorite, it would be the strawberry… but both are freaking awesome!

When I'm not stuffing my face with salty treats made of pure carbohydrates, I'm working out and trying to sweat out the excessive calories I ate.  I live in Dallas, Texas and absolutely love it.  This is the state that fries everything, serves 2 pound chicken fried steak dinners with at least 2 sides that are beautiful, tan and delicious. I eat tacos with ketchup, consider wine and popcorn a meal, put bacon on everything and will slap a fool if he asks for a bite of my beef jerky.
