Hershey’s Reese’s Pieces Bar Review

Everyone knows E.T.  If you don’t, you’re an idiot and need to reflect on the legitimacy of your pop culture knowledge.  E.T. The Extraterrestrial came out in 1982 thanks to the great Steven Spielberg.  And E.T.’s favorite sweet treat?  Reese’s Pieces!  After the premiere of the movie, Reese’s Pieces sales jumped up by at least 60%. And in the candy industry, that’s a really big deal.  But it was almost not meant to be.  Old Stevie wanted to use M&M’s as E.T.’s candy of choice, but Mars said, “Naw, pass.”  But it was Hershey that said, “Oh HELLS yah!”  They even put $1 million into ads to support the movie – which was a LOT more money back in the early 80s. They bet on their product, and it was a success.  And so, Reese’s Pieces are now identified in pop culture and in the minds of middle-aged adults that can’t let go of their childhood, as the candy of E.T.!

Hershey’s just decided to throw some Reese’s Pieces into their classic milk chocolate bar.  That’s another bet on their product that Hershey’s has taken.  But this time, they know the value of the Reese’s Pieces, so it’s a pretty safe gamble.  Personally, I’m not a huge Hershey’s milk chocolate fan.  I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it, either.  HOWEVER, putting Reese’s Pieces in it is a homerun in my book. I’m totally game!  I do find it interesting that this came out on the heels of the Mars M&M’s chocolate bar release….

The classic Hershey bar is littered with mini Reese’s Pieces.  You can even see them poking out under the chocolate.  Little specks of orange and yellow are winking at you as soon as you open the package.  So, what can you expect from this new candy bar?  A whole lotta yum, that’s what.  This is a great combination that totally nailed the marriage of two products. That crispy shell on the Reese’s Pieces brings a great new texture to the classic milky chocolate bar.  And of course, you’re hit with that amazing peanut butter center!

I do wish they had used regular-sized Reese’s Pieces in the bar.  Don’t get me wrong – every bite will have mini Reese’s Pieces in it.  But I think it would have been even more fun to have a punch of peanut butter flavor, instead of just a little jab. As a whole, it’s a really yummy candy bar, and exactly what you would expect.  This isn’t anything extraordinary like Reese’s Stuffed Pieces, Fast Break or even Nutrageous bars – but they are pretty good, and definitely worth trying.

Pop some popcorn, watch E.T. and eat this new Hershey’s Reese’s Pieces Bar. If you’ve never seen E.T., my disappointment runs deep.  Show that cute alien the respect he deserves.  He is the reason Reese’s Pieces became so popular, after all.

When I'm not stuffing my face with salty treats made of pure carbohydrates, I'm working out and trying to sweat out the excessive calories I ate.  I live in Dallas, Texas and absolutely love it.  This is the state that fries everything, serves 2 pound chicken fried steak dinners with at least 2 sides that are beautiful, tan and delicious. I eat tacos with ketchup, consider wine and popcorn a meal, put bacon on everything and will slap a fool if he asks for a bite of my beef jerky.
