Pop-Tarts Chocolatey Salted Caramel Review

New Chocolatey Salted Caramel Pop-Tarts are exclusive to Walmart! If these sound familiar, it’s because in 2016, Pop-Tarts released a Chocolatey Caramel flavor. I tried those back then and really enjoyed them, however, Chocolatey Salted Caramel does sound a lot better because of one reason — salt. Most Americans can’t get enough sodium in their diet, and I don’t blame them. I did some digging around and found out that the American Heart Association recommends 1,500-2,300mg sodium per day. Guess what? The average American consumes over 3,400mg per day. Sodium is in most snacks and we simply can’t get enough. Kellogg’s seems to agree because they straight up took an old flavor, added salt to the frosting, and suddenly they’ve got a new flavor to sell.

These Pop-Tarts feature a chocolate crust, a chocolate and caramel filling, and chocolatey caramel frosting on top. On top of all that is pretty much the star here — the salt. Doesn’t smell like chocolate or caramel — it weirdly didn’t have much of a scent. I decided to eat one untoasted at first. I taste salted chocolate first bite. Another bite…salted chocolate. Weird. Where the hell is the caramel aspect of this flavor? I then began to question everything in life. Some of my dumb thoughts included:

Do fish get thirsty? Is the S or the C silent in the word ‘scent’? Am I a fatter person today, than I was yesterday? Do we control snacks, or do they control us? 

Yeah…I know I am a loser, but I am legitimately concerned here. Why the hell am I not tasting the caramel? Let me see if the toaster has anything to say about this. Just like the 90’s group Tag Team , Whoomp, There It Is! Toasting these Pop-Tarts brought the caramel to life. The combined chocolate and caramel filling with the salt on top of the pastry makes for a delectable sweet & salty treat! Somehow, someway, the caramel went from non-existent before toasting to very prominent after toasting.The chocolate crust and frosting is good, but honestly what makes this Pop-Tart a delicious Pop-Tart is the filling here. Stripes of chocolate and caramel filling take you to the promised land. The noticeably less sweet crust balances out the sweeter filling, all while the salt truly makes this Pop-Tart a one-of-a-kind, sweet & salty treat.

The chocolate filling isn’t excessively chocolate. The caramel doesn’t attack you like a caramel candy chew. It’s just right.  The gooeyness of this Pop-Tart is a whole different story. It’s probably the gooiest flavor that I have tried! Straight up, I don’t recommend you buy these if you are too lazy to toast your Pop-Tarts. Toasting them puts them on a whole new level. Now, back to what I was saying about America’s sodium intake. Shit like this is why our intake keeps increasing. The flavor is delicious without salt, but with salt, it becomes even better. As I write this review, I only ate a few of these Pop-Tarts for breakfast. Excuse me as I go stuff my face with sodium packed snacks to get my sodium level to like 5,000mg — beef jerky, chips, pretzels, and pizza rolls.
