Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles Review
I adore the Flintstones. Cavemen living with dinosaurs is a fantasy that actually worked for the show. And how clever were they with all of their stone aged inventions? A bird alarm clock, dinosaur lawn mower, pelican garbage can, porcupine hairbrush…I could go on and on. So it made sense that Post decided to make a Flintstones themed cereal to delight the fans in 1971 while they eat breakfast and watch the cartoons. Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles were born, and different varieties soon followed. Now, in 2018, we have Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles.
The box claims they are made with “real peanut butter & cocoa,” so these can’t go wrong….right? I’ve never been a big fan of Pebbles cereal. Fruity Pebbles is ok, if there’s no other cereal around. But the tiny size of the “Pebbles” doesn’t do it any favors. However, this new flavor combination had me excited. I love peanut butter and chocolate, so I figured this pebble-shaped cereal would rock my world. Pun intended.
I opened the bag inside the box, and took a big whiff. At first, I just smelled sugar. After sniffing around the box a bit more, I picked up on the peanut butter, but only after looking like a dog sniffing another dog’s butt for a while. These actually smell a lot like peanut butter Rice Krispies treats that are drizzled with chocolate. Kind of peanut buttery, but not outright peanut buttery.
I tasted a few Pebbles dry and really just tasted a sugary sweetness, but not really much of a cocoa OR peanut butter flavor. I poured my bowl and listened to them act like Rice Krispies with their “Snap, Crackle & Pop.” and then dove into the bowl.
Nope. It definitely doesn’t taste like peanut butter and cocoa. I barely taste peanut butter and the cocoa is overpowering. It genuinely tastes like fake chocolate or artificial chocolate, which is weird because the box claims it’s real. I’m pretty disappointed because I honestly thought they couldn’t go wrong. If you like an oddly artificially infused cocoa flavor, this is for you. It’s definitely not for me. However, the milk leftover in the bowl was quite tasty.
I asked my boyfriend to try a bowl, to see if I was just completely off about the cereal. He eats three bowls every morning, and is sort of a cereal pro. He also LOVES Fruity Pebbles. He took three bites and handed the bowl back, saying he would rather have toast. Toast, you guys. He said it was oddly mushy and in no way resembled peanut butter and cocoa. So, there you have it. Neither of us dug this cereal very much.
I DID, however, have a great time eating toast and playing the games on the back of the box. Check out my stone age plane! I also helped Barney through the clouds for a safe landing at Bedrock Airport in one try. Yah, one try. Plus, I found all of the hidden high-flying inventions around the image. I probably shouldn’t be so proud of these simple tasks, but I am.
