Pumpkin Spice Twinkies Review

After eating what I consider to be the best pumpkin flavored product on the market right now-  the majestic Pumpkin Pie Kit Kat – it would be nearly impossible to really impress my snooty taste buds with another pumpkin product. I have to taste nutmeg.  I need to feel the spice of the clove.  I require just the right amount of cinnamon. And a dash of ginger has to be incorporated.  If there was a Sommelier for pumpkin pie, I would be one.

I am an American and a human being, so I love Twinkies. So, when I saw the Pumpkin Spice Twinkies at Walmart, I scooped up a box.  Actually, what really happened was I picked it up, smirked and said, “Ok, Twinkies. Give it your best shot. We’ll see if you have it in ya.” Then the little girl wearing a Disney Frozen costume looked at me talking to a box of Twinkies, raised her eyebrows and ran to her mom. I just walked on, thinking, “She’ll understand one day.”

So, this is a challenge.  I love pumpkin spice and pumpkin pie products.  I love Twinkies.  But I’m skeptical because that artificial pumpkin flavor can ruin it for me.  I don’t want a pumpkin product to remind me of Thanksgiving with my dysfunctional family. I want it to make me think of the perfect Thanksgiving day where I’m in a bar, drinking a tall vodka neat and enjoying the holiday.

Right out of the package, I smelled it.  That aroma unique to Fall weather that gets my tummy grumbling.  Pumpkin pie.  I was pretty impressed already, because most Twinkies just smell like Twinkies. These smell exactly like pumpkin pie – the spices and subtle nutty tone, the sweetness of the whipped cream and even that buttery crust.

One bite and I’m sold.  Pumpkin Spice Twinkies?  No.  Pumpkin Pie Twinkies. They absolutely nailed it. The spongecake actually serves this treat really well and acts almost as a crust alternative.  And the cream… cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg.  It’s all there and in perfect amounts.  I can honestly say that this Twinkie literally tastes like a pumpkin pie.  It’s creamy, just spicy enough, and even if it’s artificial, it tastes genuine.  The pumpkin spice cream in the center offers that gooey, denseness that you find in a bite of pumpkin pie.

My skepticism got a slap in the face, and I will no longer doubt the capability of the almighty Twinkie.  I’ve eaten 2 so far, and if I close my eyes, I can picture myself sitting in a dive bar, sipping on vodka and avoiding my family.  It’s the perfect treat to reminisce about the perfect Thanksgiving.  And that, friends, is priceless.

When I'm not stuffing my face with salty treats made of pure carbohydrates, I'm working out and trying to sweat out the excessive calories I ate.  I live in Dallas, Texas and absolutely love it.  This is the state that fries everything, serves 2 pound chicken fried steak dinners with at least 2 sides that are beautiful, tan and delicious. I eat tacos with ketchup, consider wine and popcorn a meal, put bacon on everything and will slap a fool if he asks for a bite of my beef jerky.
