Lay’s BLT Chips (Limited Edition) Review

Holy moly, Iatoli!  Lay’s recently released a new, limited edition chip flavor – BLT.  With so many new flavors on the market, it’s easy to get excited about these creations.  And Lay’s rarely disappoints, especially with their amazing Do Us A Flavor campaign that lets the good ole folks from America, design and create their own unique flavor of chips and submit it for big money and 15 minutes of fame.

I spotted the Lay’s BLT Chips when I was at a gas station.  The brilliant purple package caught my eye, and the image of the yummy BLT sandwich on it made me grab a bag to try.  As a bacon connoisseur, my expectations are pretty high.  And by “pretty high,” I mean if Lay’s messes up the artificial bacon flavoring, I will picket the Frito-Lay corporate office, start a mean-spirited Facebook group condemning Lay’s, and probably throw a tantrum in my living room.

Root beer always goes perfectly with a BLT, so I grabbed one and sat down to try out the Lay’s BLT. Bonus-  if these are horrible, the root beer can quickly wash away any ickiness leftover in my mouth.

As soon as I opened the bag, I smiled.  First, it wasn’t horrendous, and that’s always a relief.  Secondly, I smiled because I could picture a BLT from just one whiff.  I’m more excited now, because if what I just smelled was packed with the components of a BLT – the taste is going to blow me away, right?

I’m pretty sure these chips were made in a factory where BLT sandwiches are made.  They must just crunch the sandwich up, and sprinkle it on each individual chip. I’m picturing something like a little room behind a great diner, with Chip Elves on an assembly line.  Because these babies literally taste like a bite of a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich!

Two of the key parts of a BLT are the B and the T.  Bacon and tomato.  If I didn’t taste those, I knew this chip (and Frito-Lay) was in trouble.  The ingredients list a “BLT seasoning” on them, and tomato paste.  We know there isn’t real bacon on these chips, but dang if they didn’t nail that BLT seasoning right on the head. Artificial bacon is easy to detect because it’s metallic-y and extra salty.  This BLT seasoning is probably the best imitation bacon I’ve ever had.  And by simply adding in some tomato paste into the mix, it brought out that cool, crisp tomato taste, essential for any BLT sandwich.

These chips are absolutely amazing.  A classic BLT is made with bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, and the bread is toasted.  I can literally taste all of the components in every single bite.  There’s definitely a salty bacon flavor, along with the cool taste of tomato and lettuce. Even more confusing but awesome is the addition of a mayonnaise flavor, and toast.  Yes, they even added the toasted bread to this amazing equation. I even detected a hint of mustard. Plus, there is a little bit of a pepper and garlic aftertaste that really sets it off!

I don’t know if it’s the majestic purple bag, the Maltodextrin ingredient, or the little elves that made this chip so dang delicious, but I’m sold. Lucky for me, I have an entire bag to enjoy.  Lucky for Frit0-Lay that I won’t be propped outside of their corporate office in a lawn chair, sipping on a margarita  and yelling “NO FAKIN BACON!” at them.
